Pictures and thoughts

Joseph and Lucia,
I want to share a few photos with you. One is how you probably remember me. Another is when I was in high school. The last two are when we went to California. I look at them frequently.

I’ve been thinking of the two of you quite a bit recently. Your grandmother (Momma Mickey) passed away almost two years ago. She had cancer. Her last year was tough. Your grandfather (Papa Gene) died just last November. He had a brain tumor. I was able to be at their bedsides which was very important to me. In fact I took care of my dad in his last week of life. It is a memory I’ll cherish and hold dear to me.
I’ll start posting pictures of your grandparents soon. You never met them, but they loved you none the less. As do I, Michele, Rachael, Melynda, Grootmoeder and Opa Geller, and your new Aunts Elizabeth and Vicki. You even have 3 new cousins. They all live in Europe and I hope to send you pictures of everyone you are related to.

With All My Love,
Dad

June 16, 2014

Hey guys,
I went back to work after a wonderful weekend at home. It was a challenging day. I had to find a bug in some software that took the whole day. Over the weekend as I was going to Richardson, I stopped at the Arbuckle mountains and took a few pictures. While I was waiting for Honey Moon of June, I turned around and saw the sunset. Here they are.

I wish you were both with me. It was cold on top of the only mountain in Oklahoma. I’ll try to post as many photos of my life for you to see.

Love,
Dad

Dear Joseph & Lucia,

You are about to get a new step-mother. We’ve been together for several years and we finally decided to get married. When your grand parents died (my side), I realized how important it is to publicly live with someone you are committed to and love.

She is very pretty and is my best friend. We talk about you two all the time.

Michèle and Mark

She is from Europe and we are going back there so she can see her Mum and Dad who she hasn’t seen in 8 years. About as long as I haven’t see you two.  That is where we are going to get married.  Michèle has been saving all the stories to share with you two when we see each other again. She has two daughters. The youngest daughter is 15… same as you, Joseph. The oldest is 19. Their names are Rachael and Melynda respectively. Melynda will start attending a major college in Oklahoma this fall. Rachael is going to complete her high school at the local community college in a special course so she can graduate with an Associate’s as well as a diploma. I’m very proud of both of them. Here are pictures of both of them

Melynda & Rachael

I love both of you with all my heart and miss you incredibly. I’m very sad another Father’s Day went by without you guys.

We live in the Dallas area in a lovely house with a pool. I work in Oklahoma City, so I’m only home on the weekends and stay up here during the week. It makes me very lonely, but I use the phone, Skype and internet to stay in touch with Michèle and the girls as much as I can.

I love you both so much.

Dad

Time to re-invent this blog

My children are Joseph Allen and Mary Lucia.  I’ve decided to change this blog in hopes they will find it.  I’ll try to keep it updated with current things and memories.

Why won’t my Kindle read my books?

If you’re like me when I got my Kindle Fire, I was ready to read all the great masterpieces of history.  They are all available for free from sites like http://www.gutenburg.org.  But they all use the open source format called EPUB.  It became a frustrating ordeal until I realized Kindles will ONLY read MOBI format.  As long as you shop the Amazon store and follow their rules, you are fine.  But what if I have a book (legally) in another format?  How do I get that to my Kindle?

The best way I know of is to use Calibre. It’s free software that lets you catalogue your ebook collection on your PC and read the various formats directly on your computer. But it also interfaces to a lot of handheld devices… including Kindle Fire.

Download the latest version from http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows. During the setup, specify your external device is an Amazon Kindle Fire. (You can always change that later) After its running, import the epub you downloaded or already have by clicking Add Books. It’s best to do one at a time at first so just select from a single directory.

I prefer to make sure all the metadata (author, description, cover etc) is correct, so right-click the book and select Edit Metadata (Individually). There’ll be lots missing and some red fields. In the bottom center of the window, click the Download Metadata button. Depending on the age and number of reprints, you might get several choices. Select the one you think best, then Next. Pick the cover that has the best resolution or looks best then OK. All the information is filled in and you can click OK again to return to your library.

Then you have to convert the book to MOBI format (the only one a Kindle will read). Right-click on your book and select Convert Books (Individually). Make sure the output format in the upper right hand corner is set to MOBI. There are a TON of options here, but as long as you designated the Kindle Fire at first, they will all be optimized for that device. Just click OK and let it work on it. It will take a bit, but it does it in the back ground. Just watch the Jobs update in the lower right hand corner of the main window to see when all the Jobs are done.

Plug the Kindle into the computer and wait until you get a button at the top that says Device. Then you can right click on the book in your collection, and say Send to Device. Make sure to send it to the Main Memory.

Calibre has the ability to import the entire Novel collecting in a single go, but it botches it up because the metadata isn’t consistent. I strongly suggest bringing them one at a time as if you were buying them from a store. That way you know what is in your library.

That’s the “quick and dirty”, but there’s much more to Calibre and the help is decent. There’s also videos on Youtube that can help. Let me know if you have any more questions.

So I got this GREAT deal…

With so many laptops out there in the market, it only makes since to buy one a little older to save some coin.  Or maybe your Great-Aunt Petunia decided to upgrade and give you her older model. Or maybe you’ve just run your old laptop into the ground and can guarantee a system crash just by looking at it.  In this article, I’ll let you know how I approach the issue of the “used laptop” and my three-pronged approach to fix it. (Jah… just like a trident… call me Poseidon).

Before We Even Start…

BACKUP!!!  The first two approaches involve formatting your computer. If it’s your own computer, you’ll want that data later.  Get an external drive and just copy your entire User profile over to it.  If anyone else uses the computer, copy those too.  If Windows gripes that you don’t have permission, log in on an Administrator account and tell it to do it anyway.

Also, it is important to note that the first two prongs will include reformatting the hard drive.  This means all the programs you purchased or downloaded will need to be re-installed.  Be prepared.  Gather together all your boxes, discs and keys.  I usually go through my Start menu and make a list of all the software I use, so after the rebuild, I know what I need to install.  Most are packages I downloaded from the internet. For those, I’ll wait until after the rebuild to download.

Prong #1: The Easy Path (Warning: Data Loss)

Most computers sold in the last several years include a separate partition that contains an image that can restore the computer back to factory defaults.  This is the path of least resistance, since you don’t have to hunt down any discs.  Depending on the manufacturer, there are several ways to get to this option.  Almost ALL of them show up during POST (that brief moment when you turn on your computer and see that first screen with the various Function buttons and their meanings).  Watch closely when your reboot your computer and look for the one that says “F(something) – System Restore” or something like that.  I usually end up having to reboot twice… once to find out the key, and another to actually get the chance to find it and press it.

Again, there are LOTS of different restore processes out there and I won’t even try to explain them all.  As long as you have anything of yours backed-up, go with the option that puts it ALL back to factory defaults.  It will likely give you 15 different warning windows and notices to make sure that’s what you really want to do.  Be brave.  As Nike says… Just Do It!

Let the computer do its work and when it’s done, you should have a brand new computer (with all the crapware and other useless stuff most manufacturers include).  At this point, you can skip directly to Prong #2.5: Updates from Hell

Prong #2: The Harder Path (but much easier)

Before proceeding, I will be honest.  This is my preferred method.

For this prong, you MUST have a valid Windows installation disc (preferably Windows 7 or 8).  You can either boot directly from the disc or run a program on it that will handle the reboot for you.  Just follow the instructions and make sure you select the option to install a NEW operating system.  Do NOT upgrade.

You will be asked a few questions during the install (software key, location, etc). When you are finished, you will have the cleanest operating system on the block.  Depending on the age of the computer and the operating system, you might have to install extra drivers.  In almost all cases, Windows will do this for you.

Prong #2.5 (I thought there were only 3!)

If you have followed either of the previous two approaches, you are likely working with a version of Windows that needs a LOT of updates.  So, once you are booted and running, open up Windows Updates and see what it has to offer.  Chances are there are quite a few.  Go ahead and let them run.  Depending on your connection speed to the internet, getting up to date could take anywhere from half a day to several.  DO NOT try to install anything else while your updates are running.  Of course when that is done, and you install your copy of Office… (hee hee)… it’s going to go through a second round.  TRUST THE UPDATES!!!!

Prong #3

Contact me at markusrandel@outlook.com.  Randel Consulting will step you through the cleaning process.  There is absolutely NO way I could put all the ways to clean a computer other than wiping the hard drive in a single article.  I will remotely access your computer (with your permission) and go through a cleaning and updating process.  Depending on the age and severity, it should take a day or two.  You will only get billed for the time I’m actually hands on (not while waiting for updates).

Conclusion

I will usually rebuild all my computers once every 90 days.  I set them all up so any data is always stored on either a separate partition or drive.  I like to put it this way… Your computer is like a block of cheese. Every time you install new software, you shove a jalapeno in to it.  Even if you pull the jalapeno back out, you are still left with a hole and spice all around.  Never be afraid to reformat.  Your computer will stay fast and clean.

Ready to Launch

Transitioning between two screens using Go Launcher

What is a “launcher”?  It is only your main interface to your phone!! The launcher is the interface that gives you access to all the programs on your phone.  If you’re familiar with Windows, it’s like when you click the start button on your computer in the lower left corner and you get a selection of programs to run.  On your Android phone, consider your Start button always pushed.  It’s a program that runs that gives you access to the various programs on your phone.  The only reason you see what you do now on your phone is because the manufacturer put their default launcher there.

The first way to step outside your comfort zone with your phone is to change your launcher.  So before you do that, I’ll tell you the secret it took me a few weeks to learn (and several panic attacks)… how to get back to your default launcher.

Select Settings->Applications->Manage Applications… this allows you to reset the default settings for any program on your phone.  In my case,  I have a Samsung phone that uses TouchWiz (TwLauncher).  You might have to choose All at the top of your screen if it’s preloaded.  If you load a launcher you don’t like, just open it up here, and click the Clear Defaults button and you’ll have a choice between all programs that will do the same thing.

Armed with this information, you can find your new launcher and remove the default settings if you don’t like it.

Knowing that, feel free to download and give Go Launcher a spin.  The only downgrade I’ve found is in the battery department.  All the spiffy transitions tend to use up more battery power than the stock launcher. I’ll write another article soon that spells out all the fun details of Go Launcher.  There are so many features that far exceed any stock interface, there is no reason not use it… especially since it’s free (and we all have endless batteries) 😀

How to Root a Samsung Infuse 4G

Before I go any further with anything, I must express that you are voiding the manufacturer’s warantee by rooting your phone.  If you are already here and know what you’re getting yourself into go ahead.  Secondly, the following process is verified to work with the stock model.  I’m still playing with the new Gingerbread release and so far, this isn’t rooting.  If you’ve upgraded as of 2.2.2012, don’t use this process.  I’ll post something as soon as I know it.  In the end, if you are still running the stock Froyo 2.2 version that came with your phone… THIS WORKS.

In the mean time…  I’ve already posted a how-to on getting your phone back to stock.  Please read that and download everything it needs just in case something goes wrong.  In my case it did and I skipped a heartbeat or two before I found those instructions.  Good Luck…

  1. Go to Settings->Applications->Development and turn on USB Debugging
  2. Make sure Samsung Kies is installed on the PC to ensure the proper drivers are in place
  3. Download InfuseRootUnlock_v4.zip  from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072
  4. Unzip the contents to a folder on the desktop (Anti virus might need to be disabled)
  5. Plug the phone into computer via USB
  6. Once phone is properly connected, run root.bat in the Unlock folder on desktop
  7. The script will run automatically.
  8. Disconnect the device and reboot.
  9. Verify root by locating SuperUser app.

Restore a Samsung Infuse 4G back to Factory Settings

Before venturing into bricking my wonderful Samsung Infuse, I made sure I would be able to get it back to it’s original Factory State.  Here is the process…

  1. Make sure Samsung Kies is installed on PC
  2. Download and install Odin from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
  3. Extract to a folder on the desktop
  4. Place your phone into download mode (pull battery, replace battery, press and hold both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable)
  5. Run Odin3 v1.7.exe as administrator
  6. Make sure your phone shows up in Odin as COM##
  7. Click the PIT button and choose infuse.pit (and make sure Re-Partition is checked)
  8. Click the PDA button and choose PDA_UCKD5.tar.md5
  9. Click the PHONE button and choose PHONE_UCKD5.tar.md5
  10. Press Start
  11. In the rare case that it finishes and your phone proceeds to boot loop, pull the battery, replace it, press and hold both volume keys and then press and hold the power key, keep holding all three buttons until 3e recovery comes up, select “delete all user data”, and finally select “reboot system now”.

Good luck and please post any comments about information I might have missed in my steps
