01-01-2015 Your Great-Grandfather

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

Your Great Grandfather, Elmer Hiram Randel, lived a full life.  It was sadly too brief. After all the airplanes he flew through war and peace, it was eventually just a domestic act of violence that ended his life when my own dad was only 14.

He had his own flying circus with a his biplane. Your great grandmother did the wing walking. When war came about, he volunteered to train young pilots and flew supply routes all over the globe. It makes me proud to be a Randel after him.  I can only hope I’m filling the shoes left behind.

Enjoy the pictures. I’ll be waiting.

Love,
Dad

12-31-2014 Remembering Joan of Arc

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

I came across a few pictures of our dog, Joan of Arc.  We got her as a puppy at Christmas time.  She was a stinker and a handful.  I have so many fond memories of you two with her.  I’m sad to say that she got out and was hit by a car not long after you guys left.  She survived, but was severely handicapped and had to be put down.  It was another loss at a time when I thought I’d already lost so much.  Enjoy the memories of her.

Always know I’m waiting for you.

Love,
Dad

12-30-2014 About to be a new year

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

Today was a very quiet day. Michèle had to work.  I enjoyed the day by making scrambled eggs and fresh baked toast.  Rachael was home so there was always entertainment from her and her expressive personality.  I made chili for tonight’s dinner.  I’m waiting for the go-ahead from Michèle that she’s on her way home before I start the cornbread.

I made reservations for our favorite restaurant tomorrow night.  It’s Afrah.  It’s Mediterranean and really good.  I love their shwarma.  The hummus is wonderful. What a wonderful way to bring in a new year.  I’m planning to get it to go so we can watch movies and nibble the night away until midnight, then fall asleep in a wonderful food coma.

I promise you, I will take care of myself so I will be here for you when you reach out.  Until then, I’ll wait.

Love,
Dad

12-29-2014 A fun time held by all

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

Michèle and I had a fun time last night at the dinner. It was a tiny apartment jam packed with books, tables, and people.  I doubt your mother would have felt very comfortable there.  The attendees were quite progressive in their opinions. There was plenty of food (except for ours).  Somehow, the vegetable tort slid off it’s tray during transport and promptly fell into the street when I opened the back. We had a backup trifle and salad. Overall, it was enjoyable for Michèle to finally meet Farrah.

I’ve also been trying to look up some laws.  If I’m not mistaken, Joseph, you have the right at your age to decide which parent you want to live with.  It’s possible you do too, Lucia.  If either of you are reading this, see what you can find at your end.  There’s room for both of you at my home.  The schools are really good and full of opportunities.  It’s in the Dallas area which would mean lots of shopping and dining locations. We have a pool and hot tub, a dog and cat, a big kitchen great for cooking, and Rachael is still living at home. So, Joseph, you can have a sister your own age. Lucia, you can have an older sister to help you out.

You know how to reach me.  Just leave a comment here.  If your mom is reading this, then just send me a direct email at markus.randel@live.com.  Heck, you can always call me at 214-317-2461.  If I don’t answer, leave a voice mail and I’ll call you right back.  And until I hear from you, I’ll be here waiting.

Love,
Dad

12-28-2014 Finding Hope

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

I’m looking forward to today.  A former classmate of mine throws an annual “Orphans & Widows” Christmas dinner.  It’s meant for those that don’t have family to go to during the holidays.  Technically, I’m an orphan now since both my parents have passed away.

I met Farah in a philosophy class a few years ago.  She has the most eclectic group of friends.  It should be great fun. She holds this dinner every year in her tiny apartment.

I’m also happy that despite it being Sunday, I don’t have to drive up to Oklahoma today.  The plant is closed until next Monday.  That means I can enjoy the time here with Michèle and the girls.  They get back from their time with their father later today.  It was probably a tough visit for them this year.  Their grandmother and uncle both died last year.  That is who they always looked forward to seeing.

In hard times, I try to find what is good.  You two doing well in school is good.  Having a home to come to is good.  Having people that love me is good. Heck, even having a job is good.  My blessings this year are plentiful.  Please count yours.  And add to them that your father loves you completely and is waiting for you.  That’s good.

Love,
Dad

12-27-2014 Relaxing vacation

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

It’s been a relaxing vacation.  I took Michèle to see the last Hobbit movie.  It’s a bit sad that this will be the last of Peter Jackson’s installments of Middle-Earth.

Today looks like it’s going to be a bit busier.  There are two doors in the house that are sticking due to foundation settling.  I’ll have to figure that out.  And the pool (as always) needs looking after.

I’m having a hard time sleeping recently. It seems 4A.M. is my wake up time.  I start to think about you two and then going back to sleep is out of the question.  Please ask questions.  Inquire the truth. Seek real answers.  Question evidence.  Was it real, or was it assumptions?  If you ever want to see the real answers, I have them. Just ask.  Until then, I’ll wait sleeplessly.

Love,
Dad

12-26-2014 Another Christmas Done

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

It was a wonderful time with the girls yesterday.  We opened presents and had a great meal of Fondue.  I made sure everyone had plenty of presents (including myself).  I got Michèle and I matching FitBits.  Hopefully, I start getting back into better health.  The girls both got a full set of sweaters, scarves, and pajamas.  And of course there were gift certificates and cash accordingly so they can get whatever they wanted.

I had fun with a present to Michèle.  I repeated the clue hunt from limericks.  I’ll post them all below.  She had a blast doing them. She had to find printed clues I hid around the house while she was still asleep.  This is a very helpful way to deal with large presents that are near impossible to wrap.  In this case it was a pillow with arm rests so I can server her breakfast in bed.

Maybe I can do the same for you one day.  Until them, I’ll wait.

Love,
Dad

Start

There are things that are planned that never get done
There are toys bought that never get won
When mixing a rhyme
Always take time
To look under items fun.

Under Mixer

Mixing the brew might seem easy
Stirring a bigger pot can be breezy
The switch is controlled
And always polled
It’s eventually going to get sleezy.

Pump Switch

The pool was a simple find
The next will need brine
Just follow your nose
Neighbors will always impose
Just be careful not to burn the rind.

Grill

Since we’ve cooked outside tonight
Let’s turn our sights inside
We radiate the meat
While turning up the heat
I’m afraid this one won’t hide

Microwave

You’ve done well on your search
The last is in a lurch
You loan your clothes
But never find those
Only one place left to find them

Mel’s Closet

You searched far and wide
Many places to hide
Now rest your head
And lay down in bed
It’s time to let not rhyme anymore and just lay down in bed

12-25-2014 Christmas

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

Today is the 8th time I haven’t shared Christmas with you.  It always makes me sad. There are plenty of presents under the tree for Michèle, Melynda, Rachael, and me.  I’ll try to enjoy my time with my family, but there will always be something missing without you here.

I love you two so much.
Dad

12-23-2014 More pictures from the past

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

Now that I’m home, I have access to all the scanned pictures on the server.  I know I’ve published some of these in the past.  Lucia, there’s a whole series of pictures where you are adorable.  Joseph you are always handsome.

I love you both so much.  I’m waiting.

Love,
Dad

12-21-2014 Fun at home

Dear Joseph and Lucia,

I’m home on Christmas break. We attended the block party Saturday night with all the neighbors.  It was fun.  The previous two owners of the house showed up.  This is our third year we’ve done this. It’s funny that all three of us have accidentally fallen in the pool in December.  I’m very careful now if I have to go around the back. That water is cold!

Michèle is off to work this morning and I’m left to a quiet morning.  Casey Anne has been quite busy this morning chasing squirrels.  A bird decided to set up a nest in my Weber grill somewhere.  I can hear the baby’s in there.  Trying to keep Casey out of it is a challenge.

It is so nice to have a quiet morning to myself at home.  This is a first in a long time.

I’ve been thinking of the two of you a lot as we are making all the preparations for our Christmas festivities.  I would so much like for you to be part of them.  Melynda and Rachael will be here on Christmas morning for the first time in many years.  They normally go to Enid with their father.

For some reason, I miss my dad more this year than last year. I hope he’s proud of the man I’ve become.

So, until next time, I’ll be waiting for you both.  Just remember… you have a dad that loves both of you very much and misses you horribly.

Love,
Dad
